Boston rockers Godsmack have released the second single, “Soul on Fire”, from their eighth studio album.

Lighting Up the Sky hit the shelves on February 24th and is said to be the band’s final effort. In a recent interview, frontman Sully Erna said

“It’s the most important record, I think, we’ve ever written and recorded…I was never that guy that said, ‘This is our best f**king work ever’ and I’m telling you right now, this is our best f**king work ever.”

Drummer Shannon Larkin, who’s been behind the kit for Godsmack since 2022, remarked that making records is a “chore”. He also stated that:

“The elephant in the room is age. We’ve all agreed that we’d like to remain a band until we feel like we’re too old to be cool and perform our songs right and we look like a bunch of old farts or something. I won’t mention any names, but we’ve all seen bands that are probably past their shelf life, and they should wrap it up ’cause they have such a great history. We don’t want to leave a weak impression, like the old and gray Godsmack 10 years from now or whatever.”

I can see both of their points, but if you love what you do, who cares how old you are. As long as you can create and perform, why stop there just because you’ve hit middle age?

Erna said that the band won’t be retiring from the road however, they will simply just be done writing new music.

Godsmack will be making the rounds with appearances at Sonic Temple in Ohio and Rockfest in Wisconsin. Closer to home, you can check them out at the First Bank Ampitheatre in Franklin, TN on May 23rd with I Prevail

They will also be a part of Louder than Life in Louisville September 22nd
