New Music – Dorothy

Cali rockers Dorothy are on my radar of new music.

Fronted by Dorothy Martin, the band released their debut self titled EP back in 2014 but it wasn’t until 2018 that they hit the airwaves here at Z 975 with their single, “Flawless”.

If you go back to the beginning, Miss Martin was introduced to producers Mark Jackson and Ian Scott, whom her cousin introduced her to. Jackson told Rolling Stone magazine back then, “When we heard Dorothy’s voice, we were like, ‘Holy shit — if we put this behind some serious old-school metal riffs, we’ll have something big,'”

Fast forward to January of 2021 when Dorothy revealed on Twitter and in an interview with Loudwire plans for her new album, “Gifts from the Holy Ghost.” The name came to her after a member of her road crew died from a heroin overdose and came back to the land of the living.

“I come out and see him and he’s blue and green, and I knew he was dead at the moment. I just knew it, I don’t know if anyone’s had this experience. I’m pretty sure you know a dead body when you see one. I’m just sitting there breathing and holding hands with my sound engineer. I’m like, ‘Whoever’s out there, just send him back. Give him another chance.’ After a few moments of silence, this voice said to me, ‘Okay, we’re sending him back now.’ And then I open my eyes, all the color had returned to his skin. He opened his eyes, and he was alive, and I couldn’t believe it.”

The album dropped in April of this year.

Dorothy is headed out on a fall tour with fellow Cali band, Dirty Honey and both bands are part of this year’s Louder Than Life
