William Michael Albert Broad, better known to the world as Billy Idol, just dropped a new EP and song and it’s fantastic.
Idol has been making music since 1976, starting as a guitarist in a punk band called Chelsea. He left to start his own punk band, Generation X, that released three successful albums. Then after disbanding, Idol went solo dropping his debut in 1982.
With songs like “Rebel Yell”, “White Wedding” and even redoing a Gen X song, “Dancing With Myself”, Idol has sold millions of records worldwide, topped charts, even released a Christmas album in 2006. (Yes, I have it!)
He spent most of the 90s living quietly out of the public eye, but resurfaced in 2005 with a new album, another in 2014. In 2021, Idol reappeared with a new EP, The Roadside, which spawned a tune and video that sounded like in belonged in a David Lynch flick. It was haunting and beautiful, like something Chris Isaac would sing.
Idol just released another new EP, The Cage, which has picked up the beat with the title track and reminds you that just because you’re an aging punk rocker, you can still make amazing music.
“The Cage” is catchy, Billy sounds and looks great. He is currently on tour in Europe, and is scheduled for a five night residency in Vegas next month. I’m hoping for more US dates, as I saw him a few years ago at the Fontanelle in Nashville and the show was incredible. Like I said, he’s still got it, even at the age of 67.
Idol is also a very proud grandpa to Poppy Rebel and Mary Jane. Follow him on Instagram, you won’t be disappointed.
