Korn did what? Those are literally the words that came out of my mouth when I first saw the headline about Korn covering Charlie Daniels.
Korn has done a few covers in their day, most notably Pink Floyd‘s “Another Brick in the Wall Pt 2” and Cameo‘s “Word Up” so the idea of a cover is not too far fetched. In fact, the band had plans for an entire album called “Korn Kovers” but it’s never seen the light of day.
But THIS cover, this one has definitely piqued my interest particularly because I absolutely LOVED this song when I was a kid. It was this song that introduced me to Charlie Daniels. And I’m sure I’m not the only one. Mr. Daniels was a larger than life face in the world of country music and when he passed on July 6th of this year, it was a sad day for many. Including the members of Korn and frontman Jonathan Davis:
“I’ve always said it, but country music is some of the darkest ever. “Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, and, of course, Charlie Daniels all turned pain into some really powerful music that sounded alive. ‘The Devil Went Down To Georgia’ is a classic story, and we wanted to release it now to help others in need.”
The band teamed up with rapper Yelawolf on this and is incorporating the song with the Awakening Youth Foundation which helps at risk kids in the wake of losing a parent.
“Charlie left a musical legacy that goes beyond just one genre, and we want to honor his talent and influence with our own rendition of his song. It is available exclusively via Bandcamp, where 100 percent of all proceeds are being donated to the non-profit organization, Awakening Youth. Special thanks to our boy Yelawolf for jumping on the track with us.”
Here’s what I have to say…. HOOOOLLLLLLYYYYY SSSSSSHHHHH***********!!!
This one makes me want to blow the speakers out.
