Before They Were Famous: Rock Stars and Regular Jobs

Before They Were Famous: Rock Stars and Regular Jobs

Do you remember your first job? Mine was bussing tables at 14. It was awful. The job itself was fine, the manager was another story.

I’ve been doing radio for a very, very long time. It’s what I’ve always wanted to do, since I was six. But of course, it didn’t pay the best in those earlier days, so I had to supplement by working day jobs. I can remember at one point having 3 other gigs on top of doing a 7-midnight radio show. I worked at a movie theatre, a grocery store deli, waited tables and tended bar just to name a few.

We’ve likely all been there. Including some of your favorite musicians. Loudwire just released a story spilling the tea on ‘before they were famous’ jobs on some pretty spectacular names.

Ozzy Osbourne used to work in a slaughterhouse

Chris Cornell worked as a fish handler for a seafood company wiping up and throwing away fish guts

Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath worked in a sheet metal factory (that’s how he lost the tips of his fingers and in turn had to down-tune his guitar, making that classic Black Sabbath sound!)

Corey Taylor worked in a porn shop. It’s also where he wrote all the lyrics for the first Slipknot album

Eddie Veddie was a hotel security guard

Tom Morello once worked as a stripper for parties

And my favorite, Lemmy Kilmister was a roadie…for Jimi Hendrix

So you see, we’ve all been there. Doing a job we didn’t really want to do, just to make ends meet and get us to the job we do want to do. It’s not glamorous, but there is no shame to the game!
