Sir Paul McCartney delighted fans and tourists in New York on Thursday by performing a surprise concert in the heart of Times Square.

The Beatles legend gave his Twitter.com followers less than two hours’ notice to show up for the mini-gig.

Taking to the micro-blogging site, he simply wrote, “Wow! Really excited to be playing New York Times Square at 1pm this afternoon!”

Hundreds of devotees rushed to the tourist hotspot and were treated to a pop-up concert, which featured McCartney performing in the back of a long haul truck.

The legendary singer, who arrived with his band in yellow taxi cabs, treated the audience to four songs from his next album, appropriately titled New, including the title track and Everybody Out There.

As he wrapped up the set, he told the crowd, “We’ve just been told we’ve only got one more. We’ve only got 15 minutes! Mr. Andy Warhol predicted I’d get 15 minutes of fame. This is it.”

McCartney closed the promotional gig with his new single Queenie Eye, before waving to fans and shouting, “See you next time!”

It was the rocker’s second surprise New York show in as many days – on Wednesday, he thrilled students at the Frank Sinatra School for the Arts in Queens by showing up unannounced to perform.

The school gig fell on his second wedding anniversary and his wife Nancy Shevell was present for both Wednesday and Thursday’s events.
